Pep on Erling Haaland transfer rumours

Erling Haaland’s imminent arrival at the Etihad isn’t quite the Manchester reunion Jadon Sancho had in mind.

Pep Guardiola’s side have seemingly won the race for the Norwegian talisman after reaching a verbal agreement with Borussia Dortmund for his transfer.

A club statement read: ” Manchester City can confirm we have reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of striker Erling Haaland to the Club on 1st July 2022. The transfer remains subject to the club finalising terms with the player.”

Haaland is believed to have agreed a five-year contract that will see him earn £400,000 per week at City. The striker has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Manchester United but opted to move to the Etihad and reportedly struck personal terms with his new club in April.

United were hopeful they could persuade Haaland to link up with his former teammate and good pal Sancho who arrived at Old Trafford last summer. Haaland and Sancho formed a devastating partnership during their time at Signal Iduna Park.

The pair’s relationship off the pitch was equally as fruitful and Haaland was gutted when Sancho joined United. Haaland wrote on Instagram at the time: “Good luck on your next journey bro. We had some good times together! Can’t wait to see you shine!”

The feeling was clearly mutual as Sancho hailed their “connection like no other” hinting there could be a reunion later down the line at United. Sancho responded to the post: “A connection like no other, we will soon meet again brother. Take care and good luck to you too.”

Haaland did not oblige, however, and to add insult to injury they’re now rivals as he’s set to join United’s archy enemy. Sancho has struggled in his debut season with the Red Devils as he’s been unable to forge an understanding with Cristiano Ronaldo. That’s something that wasn’t an issue at Dortmund as the winger talked up his almost telepathic connection with Haaland.

He said last season: “Yeah, I’m happy he’s here. He’s a great goalscorer. He scores in every type of position and it’s always good to have that main striker. Playing behind him and with him is just a great feeling, especially on the training pitch because we work on a lot of things like one-twos. I know where to find him and where he wants the ball, and he knows how I want the ball played to me – so it’s a good understanding between us.”

Haaland said Sancho made it “easy” for him to play at such a high level and credited him for helping him settle at Dortmund so quickly.

He said after joining the German club: “You know, I’ve been here one month, but when my team is all so good, it gets easy sometimes to create chances and to play with them, because they’re so good. The first second I played with Jadon [Sancho], Marco [Reus], Thorgan [Hazard], you know these guys, it just sits direct, and that’s how it is with world-class players.”
