The FA Cup is one of the most sought-after pieces of silverware in English football due to the history and format of the competition, but it also provides an extra financial boost for those who manage to win it
Liverpool and Chelsea are two of the wealthiest football clubs in the world but one of them will receive some extra funds for winning the FA Cup final this weekend, along with adding some silverware to their trophy cabinet.
The prize fund certainly won’t be anything lucrative for these two footballing giants, but any extra income is most welcome following a difficult two years throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Each club has racked up significant winnings already to reach this stage of the competition, with one more windfall to come.
Here Mirror Football takes a look at everything you need to know about the 2022 FA Cup final and how much prize money is up for grabs.
When is the 2022 FA Cup final?
Both sides entered at the Third Round of the competition back in January, and have since made it through five matches each to get to this stage of the competition, as they look to go one further and lift the trophy of world football’s oldest national cup competition.
Liverpool overcame Shrewsbury Town, Cardiff City, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City to make it to the FA Cup final, while Chelsea defeated Chesterfield, Plymouth Argyle, Luton Town, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace on their way to Wembley.

What is the prize fund in 2022?
Just like every other previous season, clubs receive prize money for every round of the FA Cup that they progress to, and in some cases, some clubs still receive a fund even if they lose one of their matches.
Third Round winners receive £82,000 for their victories and pick up another £90,000 by winning their Fourth Round matches too. That prize then doubles for the Fifth Round, where winners are given £180,000 for progressing, before that doubles again to £360,000 for winning a quarter-final. The semi-final winners then receive £900,000 for their efforts.
As a result, this means that both Liverpool and Chelsea have received a total prize fund of £1,612,000 each for progressing through five rounds of this season’s FA Cup so far.
How much do the winners get?
For the 2022 FA Cup final winners, they will receive a prize fund of £1.8m on top of their trophy and winners medals, which is more than the total of the five previous rounds combined.
It represents an extra boost for clubs who have managed to win the trophy, but like the FA Cup semi-finals, the loser will also receive a prize fund just for getting to this stage of the tournament.
The semi-final losers, which were Crystal Palace and Man City this year, were awarded a prize fund of £445k each, which is half of what the winners earned. As for the final, the runners-up will receive £900k, which is again half of what the winners will get.
