Graham Potter has explained why he celebrated Brighton & Hove Albion’s thumping 4-0 win over Manchester United last weekend “like a bit of an idiot”.

It was the Seagulls’ biggest win of the season and just their third-ever victory over the Red Devils in the Premier League era. Potter’s side were dominant from the off and thoroughly deserved to take home all three points at the Amex.

Moises Caicedo gave Brighton the lead with a low effort from the edge of the area before Marc Cucurella doubled their advantage just after the interval. Then two goals within the space of three minutes from Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard secured an emphatic win on the south coast.

The victory moved Brighton back into the top half of the table, leaving United in sixth, and Potter has opened up about what he chose to do post-match after the memorable result. He explained how he got a little emotional as Brighton recorded their fourth win in five matches.

Potter said: “I couldn’t get back to my car. That was the only way so I had no choice, essentially!

“I am actually an all right person, you know? I have got a bit of emotion and am quite good company if you spend it out of this situation, I’d like to think!

Will Manchester United finish in the top four next season? Let us know in the comments below!

“My role is to help the team and I have to try and be myself to help the team in the best way I can. I’ve always said I don’t think it’s good to show no emotion at all, that’s a bit strange.

“I think I have shown emotion over the last three years – and sometimes not in a good way. But after you beat Manchester United 4-0 and play the way we did and you see the supporters and you feel their frustration over a season and the home record, sometimes it’s nice to walk through them and act like a bit of an idiot!”

Brighton are next in action when they travel to Leeds United on Sunday afternoon. This is their final away game of the season ahead of a home fixture against West Ham on the final day.

Meanwhile, United do not play this weekend and instead face Crystal Palace next Sunday. Ralf Rangnick’s side have won just two of their last eight games in all competitions and there are yet more reports of unrest behind the scenes at Old Trafford, this time in the form of a training ground bust-up between two teammates.
