Conte outlines what’s changed for Tottenham since last Burnley clash

After the remarkable highs of Thursday night, Tottenham will be tasked with refocusing again on Sunday.

They kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive with a rousing 3-0 win over local rivals Arsenal, heaping the pressure on the Gunners going into the final weeks of the season. Victory for Spurs against the relegation-threatened Clarets would put them above Arsenal, who would then be tasked with responding at Newcastle on Monday.

With just a point between the two sides going into the final two games, tension and drama feels inevitable. Antonio Conte, the players and the fans will have to strap themselves in.

Mirror Sport has all of your latest Tottenham news ahead of their final home fixture of the 2021-22 campaign.

Sessegnon up for top-four fight

Ryan Sessegnon has said Tottenham are well up for the fight for a top-four finish, as Spurs gear up for the penultimate game of the Premier League season.

Victory over Burnley on Sunday will heap the pressure on Arsenal ahead of their trip to the north-east and momentum feels like it’s with Conte’s team after their emphatic victory on Thursday.

Sessegnon still thinks the Gunners have the advantage, although said he and his team-mates are relishing the chance to chase them down.

“Arsenal still have the advantage,” said the wing-back. “They’re one point ahead. You could say the momentum is with us after the great win on Thursday but that’s done now. We need to focus on Burnley. It probably is the best way to just get the Burnley game over and to get the win, hopefully, so then it puts the pressure back on them on Monday night — that’s our next focus.”

Arteta issues coy response to Conte

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta would not be drawn when asked to respond to comments made by Conte after the derby on Thursday.

The Gunners head coach was angry at perceived incorrect refereeing decisions during the game and afterwards the Tottenham boss said Arteta does too much complaining. The Arsenal head coach was asked directly about the remarks, although he opted to take a diplomatic approach in response.

“I’m fully focused on Newcastle,” said Arteta. “If I say what I think I will be suspended for six months and I want to be on the touchline for our next game on Monday night.”

Merson changes mind on Spurs

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson believes Tottenham’s dominant showing over Arsenal on Thursday will give the team the edge in the top-four race.

What was expected to be a tense game between the local rivals eventually ended up as a one-sided encounter, with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and the occasion too much for the Gunners to handle. Throughout the season, Merson has backed his old side to edge out Spurs in fourth, although what he saw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has prompted a change of heart.

“I could not believe what I was watching,” he said of the game. “They have opened the door to the top four now and I’d be shocked if Tottenham don’t win their last two games. I can’t see Arsenal winning their last two games. Newcastle in their last home game of the season is a difficult game because they will have a point to prove. Everton at the Emirates Stadium? You’d take that. Everton have picked up results lately.”
